Wells Road Residence

The design for this new 4,800 SF, 4-bedroom custom home emerged in response to its spectacular 8-acre, hilltop site with 270 degree views of the rolling landscape of Chester Springs. The clients, experienced in customizing homes throughout the country, sought a permanent home with a sense of history and attuned to their easy, informal lifestyle. The house comprises multiple volumes placed and expressed to convey a sense of accumulation over time. A 3-story traditional Chester County farmhouse form anchors the composition and is positioned end-to-road as if once faced a long-gone country way. Located nearby a primary bedroom suite is perched on a stone retaining wall that might be the remains of an original outbuilding. Intervening between them, an expansive "addition" accommodates open living spaces taking advantage of distant views. An attached garage and separate car barn complete the compound.
The arrangement on the site establishes three distinct landscapes where once there was one: the entry court, the pool and formal gardens and the rolling hillside meadow with its new pond in the near foreground.
